Don't make me turn this tractor around (again)

Have you ever noticed how wisdom and forgetfulness often go hand in hand? One minute, you're brimming with clever ideas, and the next, you're scratching your head, trying to remember what you were doing. Let me share a little tale from our farm that perfectly captures this quirky duo.

The day started like any other. After responding to emails and finishing the morning chores, I realized it was already noon and my stomach was growling for coffee and lunch. The next task of the day was to head to another farm with the tractor and wagon to bale straw. Before my break, I hooked up the wagon and noticed it had a soft tire.

I decided to hook up the portable air compressor to the tire and let it do its job while I took my lunch break. The great thing about this compressor is that it shuts off automatically once the tire is at the perfect pressure. Brilliant, right? But then it hit me – I could easily forget it was connected and drive away, having visions of the compressor dragging down the road in pieces.

Determined to prevent such a disaster, I devised a plan. I tied a rag to the tractor's steering wheel and laid a tape measure on the ground pointing to the wagon. "This will remind me," I thought, proud of my forethought.

Lunch hit the spot, and sure enough, my makeshift reminder worked. The tire was perfectly inflated, and I headed out to the field on the loader tractor. It was a smooth half-hour ride, and before long, I was happily baling straw. Everything seemed to be going according to plan.

As the day wound down, I felt a sense of accomplishment – until I realized something critical. I had forgotten the bale spear! This essential pointy implement is used to pick up the big bales, and without it, loading the wagon was impossible. It was too late to do anything about it that evening, so I made a mental note to get it the next day.

The following morning, I returned home with the tractor to collect the bale spear. Anne decided to join me for the ride back to the field. We were in good spirits, enjoying each other’s company as we traveled along. About ten minutes into the trip, I suddenly remembered – we’d forgotten the bale spear again!

With a chuckle, I turned the tractor around, and we headed back to the farm to get the forgotten spear. We win some and we lose some, I suppose, but it's all good.

Wishing you a weekend filled with laughter and small victories,

Farmer Rod
