I Keep Waiting for Things to Slow Down

I don't know about you, but why is it that life always seems to fill whatever time we have?

I was thinking about that this morning while I sat down to write this email.

On today's list is getting the last of our dry hay baled and under cover before the rain this weekend. It needs doing, and no+w that the clock's ticking it suddenly feels rather urgent.

But honestly... how did I get here?

There's really no excuse.

Yes, we've been lambing. Yes, we've been planting. It's one of the busiest times of the year around here. But I've also had almost a full week of absolutely perfect weather for making hay. Plenty of time.

Yet here I am with less than twelve hours left to get the job done.

Anne and I both work full-time on the farm now. Five years ago, we both had full-time jobs off the farm too, and somehow we still managed to get everything done that needed doing. The operation was a bit smaller back then, but not that much smaller.

There's an old saying on the farm:

"Things will slow down after we're done..."

...done lambing.

...done planting.

...done haying.

...done harvest.

The funny thing is, on a livestock farm, it never actually happens.

But maybe that's not really a farm thing.

Maybe that's just life.

This week certainly got me thinking. Was I busy all week? Absolutely. Was I running from one job to the next? Of course.

But somehow the things left to do today seem to fit almost perfectly into the amount of time I have left to do them.

Maybe the list isn't actually too long.

Maybe it's just in my nature to work at a pace that keeps the days full.

And if I'm being honest, I have a feeling I'm probably not the only one.
